Winvic supports innovative AR and AI project designed to transform the construction industry

Northampton-based Winvic Construction are one of a select group of UK contractors who have won substantial government funding for projects designed to transform the construction industry through digital technology.

Winvic are supporting a project that aims to integrate BIM (building information modelling) with conversational AI (artificial intelligence) and AR (augmented reality) for faster on-site assembly.

The £1.8m project run by the University of West England tries to address the global problem of poor productivity within the construction industry by using the very latest digital technologies.

Augmented Reality (AR) solution designed to reduce costs by 70%

As part of the project, AR will be used to provide construction workers with on-site visual guidance through a mixed reality headset (the Microsoft HoloLens). This will simplify the assembly of building components and is hoped to reduce reworking costs by 70%.

With on-site workers spending more time interfacing with BIM tools than they spend on completing assembly tasks, the project will also explore how conversational AI could enable workers to communicate with BIM systems through voice control.
